Self-Care Sunday - The ‘Fits
The final week of my Self-Care Series addresses one of my favorite parts/perks of law school - the outfits.
Yes, I’m serious. No, I didn’t come here for the clothes! (Elle Woods inspo notwithstanding). But this is a limited chance to wear what I want for the foreseeable future, so of course I’m loving every second. And I do think this falls into the “self-care” realm: when you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you do good!
But re: law school attire, let me start by saying this: you can wear whatever you want to law school.
Louder for the people in the back: YOU CAN WEAR WHATEVER YOU WANT TO LAW SCHOOL!
There’s a time and place for business attire (interviews, firm mixers, real court, etc.) but day-to-day is casual as heck. I could wear sweats to every class and no one would blink. I personally don’t - I like to get wear out of my wardrobe and assemble an outfit. However, I am in an odd spot where I like fashion/style/etc. but it doesn’t come naturally to me. Color theory? Who is she???
A lot of pandemic insta scrolling helped immensely: I now follow several “neutral aesthetic” / minimalist / capsule wardrobe influencers for inspiration. I’ve also tried to shop more sustainably during law school, avoiding fast fashion, buying second-hand, and choosing investment/staple pieces over one-off styles. It’s been great - I actually LIKE having less stuff, and don’t feel nearly as overwhelmed/clueless when trying to put something together.
I just don’t have room in my brain to wonder why tf something looks off, you know?!
A WEEK’S WORTH OF OUTFITS - FEB 2022
Okay, so here we go: last week’s ‘fits for for a WIDE variety of occasions + temperatures.
MONDAY
Casual wear for class and general prep for the rest of the week. Like I said last week, Uggs are back baby!!!
This is a prime example of the “three color rule,” which I’ve learned from said neutral influencers. Limiting an outfit to three colors apparently keeps things clean & cohesive.
Cocoon coat from Everlane; scarf from Acne Studios; Perfectly Oversized sweatshirt from Lululemon; Sonya jean from Anine Bing; Classic Mini boots from Ugg; beanie from Love Your Melon
TUESDAY
Another casual day, and one of my faves this week. I really like the “blazer-with-joggers” lewk and you can’t go wrong with all black + white sneaks (though I ultimately swapped them for the boots…it was chillayyyy).
Suit coat from Ann Taylor; sweatpants from Lululemon; sneakers from Golden Goose; boots from Marc Fisher; cocoon coat from Everlane; ballcap from Anine Bing; scarf from Acne Studios; sunnies from Dior
WEDNESDAY
Workwear Wednesday! It was GORGEOUS weather - around 60 degrees - and I took a trip to the jail after class, so light business casual was perfect. I’ve had these cheetah flats for years and always get pumped when the weather warms up enough to get them out. They are looking a little worse for wear though…
Sweater from Quince; trousers from Ann Taylor; flats from Express; sunnies from Dior; earrings from Mejuri; bag from YSL
THURSDAY
Suit from Ann Taylor; silk turtleneck from Anine Bing; heels from Sarah Flint; earrings from Mejuri
FRIDAY
Casual Friday with non-stop snow from dawn to dusk. Usually I’m off campus around noon, but a make-up class + meetings resulted in a 9am to 630pm day. I knew it would be long (and cold) so I didn’t hesitate to bundle up in comfort.
Side note, this sweatshirt is one of my favorites: in a different life, I AM that girl. Cigarette and all.
Ramona sweatshirt and Sonya jeans from Anine Bing; boots from Marc Fisher; puffer coat from Canada goose; sunnies from Dior; claw clip from Anthropologie; scarf from Acne Studios; jewelry from Mejuri
SATURDAY
I call this masterpiece “Running Errands.” Three color rule on full display again and, tbh, Trader Joe’s was slightly blessed by this combo. He’s seen SO much worse from me.
ACCESSORIES
Gold Jewelry. Hoops + a ring or two, minimum.
Claw Clip. Or the trusty hair tie…anything to keep my hair out of my face.
Black Sunglasses. This particular pair are SO great that every day, I pray I never break and/or lose them.
Oversized Scarf. Necessary in a Boston winter, full stop.
Black Ballcap. I’m not really a hat person - I think they look slightly weird on my abnormally small head - but there’s no easier solution for a bad hair day.
Bags. I’m a bag gal through and through. Between “save” and “splurge,” my handbags fall on the “splurge” end of things. I don’t have (or want) a huge bag collection and you can see I’ve stuck to the neutral color palette so I can get maximum wear out of them.
And there you have it! Looking back on the week, I’m pretty surprised at how minimal this wardrobe was - borderline boring, even? I didn’t realize I exist solely in camel + black + white these days 😂 But I’m not mad about it: these were easy to put together, we got the look good/feel good/do good down, and there’s always room to grow from a solid base!
